Questionable benefits of breastfeeding.

All breastfeeding information is slightly aggravating due to the need to put a positive spin on everything. The most ridiculous example of this so far is in a list of breastfeeding benefits at my local drop-in clinic. Breastfeeding releases oxytocin, which makes you relaxed and sleepy – this was being billed as a benefit because “it helps you get back to sleep after a night feed”. Really? Because I’ve definitely got the back-to-sleep part nailed, it’s staying awake during a night feed that’s tricky. What made them think they could fool any sleep-deprived mum into seeing this as a benefit? We’re not that sleep deprived!
